Question of the Moment 117

Since tonight is Halloween (HAPPY HALLOWEEN)... What is your favorite candy? And if candy isn't your thing, What is your favorite treat?

My favorite candy is fun dip. I absolutely love it. Now if we are talking chocolate I would have to say either mini crunch bars or those little dove chocolates. YUM!

Tonight as a treat my house is giving out popcorn and juice boxes. Isn't that the best thing ever. Kids will come from miles away for this lmao.

So what is your favorite candy or treat? Let me know in the comments below =]

BBReview: "The Otherworld Trilogy 1: Faelorehn" By Jenna Elizabeth Johnson

Genre: Young Adult -Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy
Publishing Date: April 21st, 2012
Page Count: 228
Source: Sent to me by the author
Format: E-Book

Description from Goodreads.com:
I never heard him come after me and even as I climbed the slope and stumbled into our shaded back lawn, I didn't look back. It was like the day the gnomes chased me all over again, but this time I was not escaping some horrible little creatures, I was fleeing from an incredibly good-looking guy who could very well understand me completely. I was either saving myself from that serial killer I always imagined lived down in the swamp, or I had finally gone over the deep end...

Meghan Elam has been strange her entire life: her eyes have this odd habit of changing color and she sees and hears things no one else does. When the visions and voices in her head start to get worse, she is convinced that her parents will want to drag her off to another psychiatrist. That is, until the mysterious Cade MacRoich shows up out of nowhere with an explanation of his own.

Cade brings her news of another realm where goblins and gnomes are the norm, a place where whispering spirits exist in the very earth, and a world where Meghan just might find the answers she has always sought.

Review:
Now, most of you know that Urban Fantasy is not the genre for me. I usually can't get into them, but Faelorehn turned out to break that usual stigma of mine. I am not saying that I am jumping on the Urban Fantasy bandwagon, but I am jumping on The Otherworld Trilogy bandwagon.

Faelorehn gets a lot of its plot and inspiration from Celtic Mythos, and I think that it was really won me over. The Celtic myths were very interesting to learn about and instead of having to deal with a story where everything is made up and you have to just try to believe it, you are dealing with things that were once or still are believe to be true. It was definitely a very different experience, and one that I really enjoyed. If you are unfamiliar with Celtic Myths but have read any YA or fiction dealing with greek mythology it is pretty similar, reading experience wise.

The characters in this novel were very well done. Meghan was a very likable character and made it easy to kind of body swap with her and understand where she is coming from. The only thing I didn't like about Meghan is how she doesn't listen to Cade about who not to trust and that once she starts figuring out who she is she hides it from her friends (I get that part), but then lets the fact that she can't tell them completely change her. She goes from being a pretty happy girl who hangs out with her friends all the time to a completely depressed girl who never leaves the house. Obviously her friends see this change in her and bother her about it, but she can't tell them the truth so it just ensues a bunch of problems with her friends. I mean she could probably fill at least her girl friends, the ones who actual notice a change in her, in at least a little bit. Her friends were all very well done with each of their own very unique personalities. Cade was a little harder to figure out since he is a very complicated person, but I hope to figure more out about him in book two.

I think the story was very well written and compelling. I love that the chapters had titles, because then I knew where to stop if I was getting tired, because based on the titles I knew if I kept going I would be sucked in to finish and then be completely sleep deprived lol. I absolutely love that it is based on myth, because it made it so much more interesting. I also love that it is based on Celtic mythos, because I have  never heard of them before so it was a completely new experience. I think the ending was fairly good. It wasn't a bad note, but it also wasn't necessarily a good note. When reading the ending I felt like I was reading a movie script, and I liked that.

Overall:
Faelorehn was very well done. I really loved that it was based on Celtic mythos, because it was a very new and wonderful experience. I loved how all the characters were easily identifiable and didn't all start to blend. They stayed true to themselves. I am very interested to learn more about Cade's character, though, because he was very complicated in this book and I hope he will show more of himself in book two. If you are one who likes myths then this is definitely a book to look into, and even if you haven't read a book based on myth's before but are into YA or Urban Fantasy you still might want to look into this.

My Opinions On: Get Even by Gretchen McNeil

Hey guys, recently I watched an author interview with Gretchen McNeil from TWIYA and it honestly makes me want to go out and buy all of her novels and read them. Although I am already excited to get my hands on Possess and Ten, I am now excited for her newest series to come out which is called Don't Get Mad. The first book in this series is Get Even. This series reminds me a lot of Pretty Little Liars, not that I think it is a copy or anything, I just think it probably has similarities and it would definitely appeal to the PLL's crowd. Unfortunately there isn't a cover for this book as of yet, because it doesn't come out until 2014! That is such a ways away, but I guess I will endure it lmao.

In order for you guys to get excited about this new series here is the blurb from Goodreads.com

Get Even follows the secretive exploits of four high school junior - Kitty, Olivia, Margot and Bree - at an exclusive Catholic prep school.

To all outward appearances, the girls barely know each other. At best, they don't move in the same social circles; at worst, they're overly hostile.

Margot Mejia - academically ranked number two in her class, Margot is a focused overachiever bound for the Ivy League.

Kitty Li - captain of the California state and national champion varsity girls' volleyball team, she's been recruited by a dozen colleges and has dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal.

Olivia Hayes - popular star of the drama program, she's been voted "most eligible bachelorette" two years running in the high school yearbook and has an almost lethal combination of beauty and charm.

Bree Deringer - outcast, misfit and the kind of girl you don't want to meet in a dark alley, the stop sign red-haired punk is a constant thorn in the side of teachers and school administrators alike.

Different goals, different friends, different lives, but the girls share a secret no one would ever guess. They are members of Don't Get Mad, a society specializing in seeking revenge for fellow students who have been silently victimized by their peers. Each girl has her own reason for joining the group, her own set of demons to assuage by evening the score for someone else. And though school administration is desperate to find out who is behind the DGM "events", the girls have managed to keep their secret well hidden.

That is until one of their targets - a douchebag senior who took advantage of a drink underclassman during a house party, videotaped it on his phone, and posted it on YouTube - turns up dead, and DGM is implicated in the murder.

Now the girls don't know who to trust, and as their tenuous alliance begins to crumble, the secrets they've hidden for so long might be their ultimate undoing.

Doesn't this sound so good! I cannot wait for it to come out. What do you think about it? Are you going to check it out when it finally releases?

{Book Spotlight/GIVEAWAY} "Sheltered" By Debra Chapoton

Book Description:
Living together unsupervised, five troubled teens confront demonic forces and are compelled to deal with their problems in distinctly different ways. Paranormal meets psycho meets Goth in this story of a supernatural haunting and budding love.

High school junior, Ben, hacks into his step-father's real estate holding and provides rooms in an old two-story house to various outcasts: the schizophrenic kid, the angry Goth girl, and the homeless girl who worships him. When Megan needs a place to live she comes to the rooming house with a different set of problems and the ability to confuse and attract Ben.

One by one strange and mysterious occurrences stretch the teens' beliefs in the supernatural. How they deal with demons, real and imagined, has tragic as well as redeeming consequences.

---

Excerpt:
Prologue
Next Wednesday

Emily knew the precise moment that Ben returned, she felt him in her scars. She watched him carry some things to the house, heard the door close; she smiled when she heard him call out that Santa was here. He did that once before, in early December, insisting that she accept the gift he held out, not wanting her to wait until Christmas to use the mittens he knew she needed.
She went toward her door now, wondered what he had brought, and then heard Megan's voice below. Oh no, he probably brought something for her. She scuttled back to her nest by the window and stared outside, was still staring fifteen minutes later when she saw them walk down the street, Ben shouldering a shovel, his other hand knotted with Megan's.
She touched the skin on her arms, lightly at first, making it tingle. The image of Ben with Megan multiplied across her mind in broken mirrors, a repugnant picture that reflected her own self-loathing. She scratched at her scabs, felt the pricks of pain force away the ticklish sensations.
She closed her eyes.
When she opened them she saw a figure standing at her door.
"Who-?" she started, but the figment waned to less than a shadow. Still, though there was something at her door.
She rose slowly and held her hand out.
Its face was more womanly now, friendly, motherly. Yes, she knew this face. Its pearly white skin so shocking against the ruby lips, the stringy hair a match to her own. Her mother.
She stretched her fingers toward the face. The hallucination faded then sharpened. The eyes began to blaze. She drew her hands back to her own face. What's wrong with me? The delusion grieved Emily; all around her fluttered a longing.
And a deadly fear.

BBReview: "Shades of Souls Passed" By Teresa R. Andrews

Genre: Anthology - Ghost Stories
Publishing Date: December 2010
Page Count: 81
Source: Sent to me by the author
Format: paperback

Description from Goodreads.com:
A collection of true accounts of ghostly encounters in Madison County, New York. Whether it's a malevolent poltergeist, a mischievous little girl playing hide and seek, or a gardener simply going about his business, the souls that wander the empty spaces of Madison Country remain unseen until one day, or night as the case may be, they decide to make themselves known. Whatever the case, you can be sure that when you roll over and turn out the lights tonight, you won't be the only one in your room.

Review:
I love a good ghost story, so when I got the email from Teresa about the opportunity to read her anthology of true ghost encounters I had to jump on it. I couldn't wait to read what every day people discovered. Now, before I begin I must mention that in Teresa's author bio it does say that she "firmly believes a good ghost story doesn't need violence, gore, or modern day scare tactics to be suspenseful." I must say I don't completely agree with her. Yes, I completely agree that a ghostly encounter doesn't need any of those things to scare the pants of the witnesses, but if you aren't the witness and only the story hearer, they aren't that interesting.

I went into reading this novel thinking that these were going to be stories that made me even more scared to walk around my old house alone. Yes, I felt a little spooked right after reading some of them, and sometimes very scared while reading them until the end of each story, but they definitely didn't linger with me after I was done reading them. They were all pretty innocent stories. Nothing terribly terrifying happened, and on some stories I felt like they were cut too short. There were two that I really felt like they were cut way too short. They were just missing facts at the end and that was Dark Night of the Soul and The Midnight Gardener. In Dark Night of the Soul I felt like Teresa should have included what the premonition was, because it started to get pretty spooky and then just ended. I feel like even when Teresa while listening she had to have asked what the premonition was. In The Midnight Gardener it never tells how the person died, and the story teller says it was obvious to her, but I didn't find it obvious at all. Maybe I missed some clue in the story, but I just didn't get it. I wanted her to tell me.

Overall:
It is an interesting book and it is very cool to read real ghost encounters, but I wish they would have gotten progressively scarier as the book went on. I also wish that there would have been more details in the stories as to how the ghosts came to be ghosts. Just some research and a small bio on the undead would have been nice. The stories were good, but just a little too innocent for me. I did feel a little spooked while reading each since I didn't know what was going to happen next, but once I found out the next I felt a little disappointed since I was hoping for more. If you like innocent encounters where no one was hurt then this is the book for you. If you want the pants scared off you, I would stray away.

Question of the Moment 116

Is carving pumpkins one of your October/Fall traditions? If so have you carved any yet? What did you carve?

If carving is not one of your traditions, what is? I would love to know what other people do this time of year.

I, personally carve pumpkins, eat apple cider and sugar donuts, wear scarves, trick-or-treat even though I am 20 and watch scary movies. I just carved my first pumpkin of the season last night and here is what it looks like...

He's just a spooky face. I need to get a candle for him so you can really see the details. I think I did a fantastic job, lol.

So have you carved any pumpkins yet, and if not what do you do? Let me know in the comments below =]

My Opinions On: "The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls" By Claire Legrand

Hello everyone and welcome to my first "opinion post." I am hoping to make a few of these every once in a while just to change things up from just being meme's or reviews. "My Opinions On..." are going to be posts where I just talk and give my opinion on something book related. I will usually be getting my inspiration for what to talk about from This Week in YA's YouTube videos, and will always have link to the video that inspired me so that you all can get inspire as well. =D

This week I got my inspiration from TWIYA's interview with Claire Legrand. The interview is mostly talking about her inspiration behind her latest novel, The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls, and also a sneek peak into her upcoming novel, The Year of Shadows.

I have heard of this novel before the interview with Claire, and only heard great things, but after watching the interview I am even more intrigued to read the novel. I think the number one thing that really got me wanting to read it is Claire's inspiration behind the novel of the orphanage she used to live by. It is the very first question they ask her so even if you only have a couple minutes go watch the interview to at least hear her inspiration behind the story.

I really think this is going to be a novel that I fall in love with and will rave about when I finally read it. The cover alone I adore, because it has that old-timey feel to it and the novel is only like $13 for the hardback at Barnes and Noble. WHAT A STEAL!! I know this is more of a spotlight post, but I consider it an opinion post since I am telling you my opinion on it and I am picking what I want to talk about.

So, now to get you guys more involved with these opinion posts I want to hear YOUR opinion. Have you already read The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls? What did you think of it. And if you haven't read it, what do you think of it thus far? Will you read it?

BBReview: "Apparition" By Dylan White

Genre: Young Adult -Paranormal
Publishing Date: March 20th, 2012
Page Count: 380
Source: Sent to me by the author
Format: Paperback

Description from Goodreads.com:
Jade Foster just moved to a new city with her mother and step-dad in the middle of her senior year. She doesn't know anyone. The boy who likes her has a crazy, jealous ex-girlfriend. And her bedroom is haunted.

Sean Clayton died at eighteen almost seventy years ago. He hopes Jade can help him move on. But his connection to Jade exposes her to dangerous dark forces from the afterlife. In his efforts to protect Jade, sean falls in love with her...

And that might be the scariest thing he could do.

Review:
Apparition is a very good story about a girl named Jade who ends up having a ghost haunt her room, but ends up being best friends with him. It was kind of your typical hot male ghost haunting a girls room, feelings start to form, what happens now? book, but I did really like it. There were some things that I didn't like, but overall I really enjoyed the reading experience and will definitely continue on with the series.

The number one thing that I did like was the characters that Dylan created. I think they were all very well formed and each had their own personality. There was no confusion about who was talking if they didn't mention the name every time they spoke. You could tell who it was by the way they spoke. I also really liked how Jade came to discover Sean's existence. There was a lot I did like about this story, but I just don't seem to have words for it. I think this novel would have been a solid 4 stars if the almost ending was different. I liked everything until about chapter seventeen, thats when things turned grave (pun intended) for me.

The way things end with Derek is a little rough. I don't want to give anything away so I don't want to say much, but I just felt like what happened should have played a bigger impact then it did. I realize that book ends the morning after is happens, but I just felt like more should have happened pertaining to that event. I also wish there were more bad things against Derek. The whole time Sean makes Derek out to be this horrible guy and yes, what he did was horrible, but not as bad as what I thought was going to end up happening. I also wished that there was more about Sean. The whole focus on Sean was only what was happening while he was with Jade, or someone she knew, I just wish we knew more about Sean in book one especially because of how the book ends. I realize Dylan might have made it that way so you could find out who the "real" Sean is in book two, but still I wanted more now. Lastly, I just felt like something was missing in the end. Like something bigger should have happened. I think the story really needed a big cliffhanger to really bring everything together, because the whole story was a little mellow, almost, so I think a cliffhanger would have worked veyr nicely.

Overall:
I did really enjoy the reading experience of this novel, but I just wished the ending would have been packed with a bigger punch. I think a really huge cliffhanger would have worked much nicer. I did enjoy the novel, and I will continue on with the series, but I just felt like something was missing in the end. I also wish that more about Sean would have been told in book one instead of making us wait till book, or that more hints were dropped through out the story about sean in reference to what Jade learns in the end. Overall it was a good story and I am glad that I read it, because I love ghost stories. I recommend this to those who also love a good ghost romance.

Follow Friday #36

This Weeks Follow Friday Question:

What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie? Please explain in graphic details of goriness...

I think the book that would make a great Halloween movie would probably be "Anna Dressed in Blood" By Kendare Blake. The scene when they first go into the house and she kills the one boy would be amazing to see! I would go into more gory, awesome details, but I don't want to spoil this book for anyone, but trust me there is some AMAZING imagery in this novel and it would be an amazing film to see for sure. Just the gore alone in this novel would be amazing to see, not to mention all the scary ghost parts, or the flash backs, or the rest of the creepy creatures in this novel.

Question of the Moment 114

Have you ever had a ghostly encounter OR have you ever wanted one?

I have had small ghostly encounters where either I thought I head something/someone or thought I saw someone, but I have not had anything definitive or anything happen where I knew 100% that I saw a ghost. I would like to have a ghostly experience, though. A nice one, though, nothing scary preferably. I would love to also go legit ghost hunting, I think that would be super fun!

So, have you ever had a ghostly encounter or wanted one? Let me know in the comments below =]

BBReview: "Save the Pearls Part 1: Revealing Eden" By Victoria Foyt

Genre: Young Adult - Fantasy/Adventure/Romance
Publishing Date: January 10th, 2012
Page Count: 307
Source: Sent to me by Sand Dollar Press
Format: Hardcover

Description from the cover jacket:
Would you betray your loves ones - and maybe your entire race - to avoid a horrible death?
In a post-apocalyptic world where resistance to an overheated environment defines class and beauty, Eden Newman's white skin brands her as a member of the lowest class; a weak and ugly Pearl.

The clock is ticking: if Eden doesn't mate before her eighteenth birthday, she'll be left outside to die. If only a dark-skinned Coal from the ruling class will pick up her mate option, she'll be safe. But no matter how much Eden darkens her skin and hair, she's still a Pearl, still ugly - cursed with a tragically low mate-rate of 15%.

Just maybe one Coal sees the real Eden and will save her - she has begun to secretly date her handsome co-worker Jamal. But when Eden unwittingly compromises her father's secret biological experiment, she is thrown into the eyes of a storm - and the remaining patch of rainforest, a strange and dangerous land.

Eden must fight to save her father, who may be humanity's last hope, while standing up to a powerful beast-man she believes is her enemy, despite her overwhelming attraction. To survive, Eden must change - but only if she can redefine her ideas of beauty - and of true love.

Acclaimed writer Victoria Foyt blends equal parts suspense and philosophy, adventure and romance, in this captivating novel set in a terrifying future, which is all too easy to imagine.

Review:
Revealing Eden is a very good novel. It is very different and a tad controversial since it deals with race, but overall I think it was wonderfully done. The concept of sun radiation taking over the earth causing new social standards was a very interesting idea. You could really envision this happening. Living underground and being terrified of going out in the sun were only minor fears in this world. The people around you and their status was an everyday fear.

I think Foyt did a very good job writing this. I really like her writing style and how it is very simple. She never  tried to over complicate things, when she very easily could have. I also really love her world building, you could very easily picture what was going on. Although I did end up really liking this novel, and besides all the good, there were a few things that I didn't like.

One of those things was the insta-love that took place. I mean I always hear other bloggers complaining about insta-love, but I usually don't mind it all. Some characters are very swoon-worthy and even I instantly fall in love with them. The only difference with this novel is that Eden falls in love with someone who has yet to show us a good side. All we see is this mean, monster of a man. It was hard to go along and agree with Eden's feelings when he was such a bad guy. Bramford is even psychologically abusive. He acts nice to her one moment and then is throwing her in a jail cell the next. It is all emotionally jarring. He wouldn't explain anything to her and was never ever really nice to her. Usually I always have the authors back on creating an instant love connection, but I just couldn't be behind this one 100%. Towards the end Bramford does turn into a really nice guy so I have a feeling I will enjoy book two much more.

The other thing I didn't really like about this book is the science experiment is a little farfetched. This was the only thing I couldn't picture in my head. I usually don't read any fantasy novels or science fiction novels for this exact reason; they are too far fetched. I know its extremely weird that I can be completely behind werewolves, vampires, zombies, etc., but I can't grasp the concept of a part animal/part human new hybrid race. I just couldn't picture it really happening. I could picture it for the sake of the book, but I couldn't connect it to happening in real life.

Overall:
I really ending up liking this novel. There were a few things I didn't love like the instant love and the farfetched-ness of the jaguar man, but overall the writing was great. This is a very unique book with a very, very interesting concept and theme. You could really picture this happening in real life (minus the jaguar man). The world building was fantastic and you could easily picture it in your head. Although there were a couple things I didn't love about the book, I definitely liked it as a whole. I recommend this to those who like fantasy novels and those who like a little dystopian. I will more than likely be continuing on with this series.
