{Cover Reveal and Q&A} "Broken" By C.J. Lyons

My Thoughts:
I absolutely LOVE this cover! I love that it is made out of broken glass and is in color. It is just so pretty and mesmerizing =D

Description:
For Scarlet Killian, every day is a game of Russian roulette—she has a 1 in 5 chance of dying…

New York Times bestselling author CJ Lyons makes her YA debut with a fast-paced thriller sure to keep readers guessing to the very last page.

Fifteen-year-old Scarlet Killian has one chance for a normal life. Only problem? It just might kill her. Diagnosed with a rare and untreatable heart condition, Scarlet has never taken the school bus. Or giggled with friends during lunch. Or spied on a crush out of the corner of her eye. Scarlet has come to terms with the fact that despite the best efforts of her doctors and parents, she's going to die. Literally of a broken heart.  So when her parents offer her a week to prove she can survive high school, Scarlet knows her time is now... or never.

Scarlet can feel her heart beating out of control with every slammed locker and every sideways glance in the hallway. But for the first time in her life she makes real friends. She also makes new discoveries about the truth behind her illness... a truth that might just kill her before her heart does.

Q & A With C.J. Lyons:

Q:Is Long QT a real disease?

CJ: Yes. As a pediatrician I diagnosed my niece with Long QT Syndrome when she was born. Her heart specialists believe she's the youngest person in the world diagnosed with Long QT. She's had to take medicine every day of her life and can't ever skip a day. So far that's added up to over ten thousand pills taken.

You know that feeling you get when you've run as hard and fast as you can and you stop but your heart keeps galloping along? And you wonder for a second if maybe it's not going to stop, but will keep galloping out of control? But then of course it settles back down. For people with Long QT, their heart doesn't change gears well, going from regular to galloping and back again. So they have to avoid anything that would make their heart race.

No sports or aerobic exercise. No horror films. No roller coaster rides. No jumping into cold water on a hot summer's day.

But that doesn't have to stop someone with Long QT like my niece from having a great life. Today she is a brilliant, active fourteen-year-old who gets straight A's, enjoys riding horses, archery, reading, breeding Rottweilers, and who wants to grow up to be either a fashion designer or President of the United States. Her main fashion accessory is her portable defibrillator, Phil, who goes with her everywhere, including camping, to the beach, and recently to her first Broadway show.

BROKEN is dedicated to her fearless approach to life where outwitting Death is simply part of her daily routine.

Q: What was it like working in an ER? Is it like on TV?

CJ: Definitely nothing like Grey's Anatomy, but the first few seasons of ER get it right. Working in the ER is basically about learning how to control (and live with) chaos, the art of listening, and how to quickly decide what's the most important thing you need to tackle next.

I worked three jobs to put myself through medical school and one of them was waitressing at a very busy family restaurant. Honestly, that was the best preparation I ever could have had for life in the ER.

Q: Why did you leave medicine to write books?

CJ: I've been a storyteller all my life—a fact that used to get me placed in time-out a lot as a kid. But writing stories has always been my way of making sense of the chaos that goes on in the world around us. I wrote my first novel in college and wrote two more science fiction novels in medical school.

Then, while I was an intern at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, one of my close friends was murdered. Dealing with that grief and trauma while still working seventy hours a week and trying to save lives—I wasn't prepared for that. So I turned to my writing and that's when I wrote my first thriller. I never thought about actually making a career of it until years later when friends who were published authors encouraged me to enter a national writing contest and I was a finalist. This led to several publishing contracts and I realized that as much as I loved being a doctor, here was a chance for a second dream come true: being a full time writer.

It was a huge leap of faith leaving my job (and my patients—I missed them, a lot!) but I've always believed that if you're going to dream, you should dream big, so I went for it. Since then I've published twenty books, hit #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, won awards for my writing, and most importantly, have had the chance to impact millions of people through my novels. Talk about a dream come true!

Q: What's your best advice for someone who wants to be a writer?

CJ: Never surrender, never give up. Writing is hard work, it takes years to master the craft, so you need to stick with it. And read, read, read…pay attention to what makes the books you like work as well as why the books you don't like fail. You never stop learning in this job, but that's also what makes it so much fun.

Follow Friday #159

This Weeks Follow Friday Question:
What do you do with your books after you're done reading them?

Honestly? Nothing. If it is a book I bought I put it back on the shelf. If it is a book I didn't like then I'll put it with the stack of books I have as giveaways. If it is a kindle book that I bought then I will archive it after I'm done reading it. If it is an e-book I got for review then I will take it off my kindle when I'm done reading it and delete it completely if I didn't like it. I really am a book hoarder so I don't usually go through my books and spring clean. Is that bad? lol

Top Ten Words That Make Me NOT Pick Up A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there will be a new topic for everyone to create a top ten list with.

This Weeks Topic:
Top Ten Words That Make Me NOT Pick Up A Book

10. Fantasy
One genre that I have very mixed feelings with is Fantasy. I don't really like Fantasy, because it is just that; Fantasy. I don't like reading about pixies or faeries or other fantasy-esq things. It's just not for me, so when I read the word Fantasy in the description or genre I usually stay away from it.

9. Faeries
Like I mentioned above I don't like Fantasy, and usually a big part of fantasy novels are faeries. They are just not the creature for me. I've never liked Faeries. Even as a kid I didn't really like Tinkerbell. She just wasn't for me. Crazy little flying things that sparkle and light up just don't seem tough enough for me.

8. Children/Troubled Marriage
I don't have children nor am I married so books with these topics don't appeal to me. I think even when I do get married I won't be interested in reading about troubled ones. I barely like hearing about real peoples relationship problems, the last thing I want to do is read about them. The children's topic also goes with kids books/middle grade books. Books targeted towards children are definitely not my reads of choice either.

7. Classic
I know some people might hate me for this, but I do not like classic novels. Honestly, I hate them. I don't even get why they are classics. They are boring and censored and dull. Make kids read some of the popular YA books out there with the same messages behind them and they will have a much better reading experience. Like who exactly is in control of deciding what books are classics? Probably some old, wrinkled man who doesn't like fun. lol

6. History/War
Another word that people might despise me for, history. I hate history. It has almost been my most hated course. Every time I have had to take a history class I have wanted to kill myself, so when I see books that are based on real life events from history I do not want to read it at all. The only thing that hints at these topics that I still like are steampunks and dystopians. I will read those no problem, but definitely not historical fictions.

5. Poetry
Ugh, I must not be a "girl" or something, because I also hate poetry. It just doesn't appeal to me at all. I almost feel like poetry is only for fools and con artists, because honestly I could write three words on a page and say its a poem and people would buy it and pay me for copies. How ridiculous is that? In my creative writing class we had a poetry section and I just thought what I was reading was complete bull. Sorry poetry fans, don't hate me lol.

4. Taboo
Taboo topics really just make my skin crawl. I know there are some books out there that are on taboo topics that are huge sellers and get great reviews from my fellow bloggers, but I will not read them. It freaks me out when I read books about step brother/sister relationships, or cousins, or whatever. They just make me say "gross!" and I don't want to read them.

3. Sci-Fi
I know its silly, but I can't read science ficition books, because I can't believe them. They are way too far fetched. I can watch a science fiction movies or tv show, and enjoy it a lot, but I can't read about it. It's silly because I can believe in aliens, vampires, werewolves, mermaids etc., but when it comes to crazy science I'm lost. For example I love the show Game of Thrones, but I would probably be calling a hotline if I tried reading the books.

2. Non-Fiction
I read the escape reality, the last thing I am going to want to do is read about reality lol. I think that sums it up enough.

1. Biography
And at the top of my hate list are biographies. Number one, I don't like people. I would rather donate my time at an animal hospital than a human hospital. I know, that's terrible but its the truth. So, I really don't want to read about someone's life and how terrible it was/is and how they overcame those struggles. I just don't care enough.

BBReview: "Perfect Chemistry 1: Perfect Chemistry" By Simone Elkeles

Genre: Young Adult - Contemporary/Romance
Publishing Date: December 23rd, 2008
Page Count: 357
Source: Borrowed from my local library
Format: Paperback

Description from Goodreads.com:
A fresh, urban twist on the classic tale of star-crossed lovers.

When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created 'perfect' life is about to unravel before her eyes. She's forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for: her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect.

Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more.

In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.

Review:
Perfect Chemistry is such a cute story! I am so happy I am new fan of Simone Elkeles, because I cannot wait to read the other books in this series (that everyone loves) for the first time. I also can't wait to read the rest of the books by Simone. I love finding new authors to fan-girl over =D.

Alex and Brittany's story was an unexpected romance, but at the same time it wasn't too unexpected. Once you got to know them both you knew they had a lot in common and that they only had each other that they could confide in. This made their relationship not too far fetched. The fact that they kept so much inside and hidden from others, but that they could tell each other made my heart melt.

This was a very emotional story. The last couple of chapters really pull at your heart strings and it almost had me crying. A lot happens that you don't expect to happen and a lot that you don't want to happen either. I would talk more about it, but I don't want to give anything away. Just know that my heart goes out to Isa.

Another thing that I really enjoyed was that even though the characters have very deep lives and personalities the book wasn't too heavy. These characters felt very real, but they didn't weigh down the story, it still felt light. The only thing that really made this book fall just short of a five star review was Alex. He just wasn't as drool worthy as I wanted him to be. I have read one other book by Simone Elkeles and that bad boy had me drooling all over the place. Alex was great, but I think he was just a little too rough for me. I did, however love all of the Mexican culture that Elkeles included in this book. It really made it feel authentic.

Overall:
I really loved this book. It was such a cute story about an unlikely pair falling in love. This book is packed with emotions and almost had me crying at one point. The only thing that fell a little short was Alex's drool factor. I think he was just a little too rough around the edges for my taste, but overall I really enjoyed his character. This book definitely reinforced how much of a huge fan of Simone Elkeles I am!

Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 4/5

BBReview: "The First Zombies: Dead Awakening" By Josh Atkins

Genre: Horror/Fantasy
Publishing Date: May 22nd, 2012
Source: Sent to me by the author
Format: E-Book

Description from Amazon.com:
A viral pandemic has wiped out parts of the world at an alarming rate.

A group of college students who heard the news were held up in a dormitory, surrounded by the undead...zombies...

Not knowing what is happening and cut off from the world, they struggled to overcome their fear and confusion with only one goal in mind - STAY ALIVE!

Review:
For being a short story Josh Atkins managed to pack a lot of detail and story into it. He also managed to make everything feel extremely real. The first chapter will definitely have you hooked. It is a very scary scene (and also a very cruel ironic joke Josh!) I felt like if there was a real life zombie invasion this story would be very close, if not exactly, what would happen. I also felt that the pace of the story was very well done. It never felt rushed or dragged on. Overall I really enjoyed the story and if I had the chance to go back in time and reconsider accepting this book for review I wouldn't. I'm very glad I got the chance to read it, but I did have some minor problems with the story that I have to mention.

SPOILER ALERT If you haven't read the story then please just skip down to the overall portion, because there will be spoilers.

The first thing is that I wish there was more background information on David, because I didn't understand why he was so eager to hand over control of everything to his friend or why he was so willing to risk his own life. It was almost as if he didn't care if he made it out alive. I just didn't understand why he felt that way. I know it's a short story and that maybe for the purposes of it staying short Josh didn't want to reveal those details just  yet, but it just bothered me.

Second I don't understand why Mark had to be portrayed as a bad boyfriend. Him hooking up with chicks didn't really add or take away from the story. I wouldn't have minded this minor character flaw about Mark, but he ended up being a really nice guy so it just didn't fit the player ways we learned he had earlier in the story.

Third I don't understand why Sandy was so overly thankful to David. I mean yes, he saved her life she owe's him everything, but she was just a little too enthusiastic. It just felt more air headed and less genuine.

Lastly I didn't understand the ending. It completely threw me and confused the heck out of me. I didn't understand the little boys part in everything. It just threw me for a loop and made me end the book in a confused slump.

END OF SPOILERS

Overall:
I really did enjoy reading The First Zombies. It felt very realistic and that was the number one thing I enjoyed. There were some character flaws that I didn't understand, but think there might be more clarification in later books. The ending was extremely confusing for me and I just didn't understand the little boys part in everything. Overall it was a really great read and I am very glad I got the chance to read it.

Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ 3/5

BBReview: "The Shopgirl and the Vampire" By Ciar Cullen

Genre: Adult - Paranormal Romance
Publishing Date: September 21st, 2012
Page Count: 45 pages
Source: Boroughs Publishing Group - Lunchbox Romances
Format: E-Book

Description from Goodreads.com:
At the cusp of the 19th century, a penniless lass learns her dashing guardian angel is actually a blood-sucking devil.

Review:
My feelings were a little mixed while reading The Shopgirl and the Vampire. I really enjoyed the beginning and middle of the story, but by the end it fell a little short. In the beginning the story had a very nice pace. It didn't lag and it wasn't too fast. It was also very interesting. I liked that it was during the 19th century, because it gave it that extra flare. The story kept me asking questions and wondering what was going to happen next.

The characters, Kitty and Phillip, were very interesting as well. I think they made a really good pair and fit together nicely for the story. I liked Kitty the best, because she felt very real to me. The only thing missing from their characters was more history and back story. I wish I would have been told more about their pasts, especially Phillip.

The ending was what made this story fall apart. The pacing was way too fast and it was easy to tell the pace didn't match the rest of the book. I also felt like the ending was a little too clean. I know that this is supposed to be a short story stand alone, but it couldn't have been ended a little messier. I just felt like things were too tidy, especially with George's character. George had this specific personality and way he held himself through out the entire and story and then in the ending he did something, to me, very out of character. The ending just didn't feel right to me.

Overall:
I enjoyed most of this story. I think it was a very interesting tale and loved that it was set in the 19th century. The main characters, Kitty and Phillip, were done very well and I think fit great together. The pacing through out the whole story was great until the very end. At the end the pace picked up a great deal and felt too rushed. The ending was also too tidy and clean for me. I wish things would have ended a little messier, especially with George's character. Overall, though, it was a very nice story and I enjoyed reading it.

Follow Friday #158

This Weeks Follow Friday Question:
Book Vacay: Where is the best destination reading spot for you? (Where do you like to go to read other than your home)

Other than reading indoors in my home my favorite destination place would be outside in the backyard. I prefer my hammock, but when I can't sit in that to read I'll sit in the chair on the back porch and will be just fine. The only thing is that I either have to be alone or with someone else who is reading or my focus won't be on the book and I'll get frustrated lol.

BBReview: "How We Came to Be" By Jamie Canosa

Genre: Young Adult - Contemporary
Publishing Date: November 1st, 2012
Source: Boroughs Publishing Group - Lunchbox Romances
Format: E-book

Description from Goodreads.com:
There are certain things we don’t talk about, and one such confidence brought 17-year-old Sara to the love of her life. But, will he be able to save her from the secrets, or will she drag him down with her?

"Ethan Harris was the boy I hadn't been able to stop staring at since he moved in next door, the boy that every girl with eyes had swooned over at school for the past two years. The boy that had zeroed in on me from day one and refused to set his sights anywhere else. He must have asked me out a dozen different times, and every time I’d turned him down. The guy just wouldn't take no for an answer. I guess he wasn't used to hearing it very often."

Review:
This short story was absolutely heart warming. I would definitely recommend How We Came to Be as one of those really great short stories to read. I have had to write short stories before for classes and they are not easy at all to write since you have to fit a lot of information into a very small space, but I think Jamie did this very well.

I loved how in such a small amount of time you completely loved Sara. She has endured so much hatred and violence from her dad, but she somehow kept her compassion and innocence. I think that really had something to do with the fact that she had to be there for her little brother, Kevin. I think if Kevin wasn't in the picture then Sara's heart would have turned to stone.

Like I mentioned before the pacing was done very well and it didn't feel rushed. I felt like it was all done with good timing. The only part that felt fast was Sara and Ethan's relationship. I really loved their relationship and the bond they formed, but it did feel a little rushed.

Overall:
Really great short story. I think the subject matter was very interesting and was done really well. It really make's the reader root for Sara to get through it all. I think it was wonderful how in a short amount of time you could really love Sara's character so much and I loved that she kept her innocence and compassion through everything. Except for the pace of Sara and Nathan's relationship, I think the pace of the story was done very well and never felt rushed.

Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 4/5

About the Author:

No one really knows what they're going to be until they actually experiment different things. I did that, and now I know what I want to be.

I could say something like, "I've been writing since I was some young age" but that would be a lie. I have been reading since I was able to understand the word 'the'. So, it really all started when I read book after book, and then soon enough I had read so much books that even I was starting to get sucked into the fictional life.

On a cloudy day, I decided to write my first novel (I didn't really have anything else to do). The thing here is that I'm known to have a weird imagination, and I guess the first time I got told that, was the day I actually realized that I did. Which led me to putting my weird imagination on paper, turning it into a novel, and loving the fact that I actually did it. And had fun with it.

I was born and raised in New Zealand. (Yes, it's that little country beside Australia. No, it's not a part of Australia.) I dream big, and have family and friends that support me with each step I take. I spend a majority of my time reading, writing, watching Sci-Fi movies (I'm a nerd and proud!), listening to music, and going on an adventure with my characters (that's my favorite one). I am also a part-time reviewer on Step Into Fiction (That site totally rocks by the way.)

I believe that if you really want it, you can have it. I'm not saying it's going to be easy because it probably won't be. As for me, I'm excited to go on this journey and introduce everyone to the imagination that is mine, and weird.

Guest Post:
First off, I would like to thank Becky for allowing me onto her blog to talk about my writing process and ways that help defeat writer’s block.

Okay, so for everyone, they’re different. For me, I don’t have a ritual. I don’t sit down at a certain time of the day and expect myself to write for so and so hours. I don’t even plan when I write (okay, that’s kind of a lie. I plan five minutes before).

If I were to do all of the above and force myself to throw those words onto a word document, it would just end up with me backspacing every single word and starting over a few days later. It doesn't work for me when I just push it out. I know this may sound weird, but I wait for it to hit me. And it does work. Counterpart took me a little under two months to write, and half of those times I was writing on average 10,000 words a day. But there were times that I just forced myself to write and I never appreciated it as much as I appreciated the work I did when I let it come to me.

But if there are things that I must do when writing, it’s these:

  1. I love sound. I can work in silence, but sometimes listening to the “tap-tap-tapity-tap” gets annoying, so I need music of all things. The TV is okay too, but that does get annoying.
  2. I have to have a coffee beforehand, or in the middle… actually, I’ll only drink coffee while I write.
  3. For some odd reason, I can’t really write when other people are in my sight. And I know that sounds weird, but the presence of another being becomes distracting, so I have to move. Lately though, I've been getting better and I can now write with ONE person in the room. Hahha.
  4. I don’t take breaks until a chapter is done (okay, maybe a few when a good song comes on and I just need to break out singing).
  5. And last but not least, I only write at night. It’s as simple as that. I turn nocturnal when I’m writing. You don’t even know how serious I am with this one. I sleep during the day. Work at night.

Another thing that writers hate is writer’s block. I get this all the time. There is not a week that I don’t have writer’s block. What I do to get rid of it is a lot of simple things that maybe other people could try.

  1. Simply step away for a few minutes and think about it while I’m “pretending” to watch TV.
  2. Maybe I’m hungry? Eggs were my brain food for a long time.
  3. Sometimes I have to just move my legs, because I always write with crossed-legs (like I am right now) and your body just needs to move, so I try walking.
  4. A big one for me and this is related to the above one, but I like to do a little workout. Actually this one is my favorite. When I have writer’s block or when I’m simply bored, I find myself just doing anything that involved pumping my heart up a few beats, and forming a sweat. It helps me because it clears all my thoughts, especially when I’m listening to music.
  5. Another way to get rid of writer’s block is to just think about why I’m in that place to begin with. It could be because I've put in something that really isn't going to fit, and maybe I need to rethink that scene for me to get rid of the block. Sometimes it can be a little thing in my story that’s holding me back from writing more, so when I fix up that little thing, I’m usually back to writing.

So, I hope any of this interests anyone. This was really fun to share my secrets. Haha. And once again, thank you.

Review:
I honestly didn't really know what to expect when it came to Counterpart. I haven't read a whole lot of books about succubi, which now that I think about it I don't know why, so I didn't know if I was going to like Counterpart or not. However, I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. It's about 400 pages long, but just like I was told by my good friend Ashley, it's a very quick read. The story really grips you from page one and doesn't let go till the end. I honestly found the whole story fascinating and fresh.

I really love Maya's character. I found I related to her very easily and I absolutely loved her snarky attitude. She has a really great group of friends surrounding her, and I loved each of their personalities as well. There was a lot of feeling in this book, which I absolutely adored. I really empathized with Maya and could completely relate and understand how she was feeling at all times. I think that is the one thing that really had loving this book. It made me empathize so much. The second thing that really had me hooked was how well the scenes were described. Every scene was vivid and I felt like I see exactly what K.J. wanted me to see, especially the sex scenes. Even though there is a lot of sex, she's a succubus what do you expect, it never felt too raunchy or graphic. The sex scenes were very well done and I didn't feel like I blushing the whole time or looking over my shoulder to make sure nobody could read what I was reading. Very tastefully done.

In my opinion there are two endings. The "real" ending is a nice book 1 closer. It wraps mostly everything up pretty nicely, but it still shows that there is more to be told in book 2 of this series. It isn't a cliff hanger ending, but it still hints of a lot more to come. Then there is the second ending, as I like to call it. Just after the last chapter there is a chapter in Tristan's point of view during an earlier event in the book, and OMG is it a cliff hanger. At least for me it was. It left me with so many questions, and kept talking about things basically in code. I need to know what the heck is going on! All I will say without spoiling anything too soon is I need to know what that note was talking about. Just know the note Maya will get has to do with something in Tristan's POV and I need to know!! lol

Overall:
I absolutely loved this book! The entire story line was fresh and fascinating. It is a long book page number wise, but it is still a very quick read in terms of how gripping it is. I think the sex scenes were done extremely well. I never felt like I was reading a porno or that it went too far in details. It was tastefully done, but still thrilling. The end was perfect, and the POV chapter by Tristan is a complete cliff hanger. I need to know more immediately. Definitely a great read, I am so happy I got the chance to review it and I am so happy I enjoyed the read so much. I highly recommend picking this book up!

BBReview: "Red Ridge Pack Series 2.5: Born of Lies" By Sara Dailey & Staci Weber

Genre: Young Adult - Paranormal/Romance
Publishing Date: July 3rd, 2013
Source: Sent to me by Boroughs Publishing Group
Format: E-book

Description:
Lillian Michael’s world changed the day Marcus chose her. Gorgeous, strong, fierce…and soon he would be alpha of her werewolf pack. But then the marriage was set. No choice. No looking back. Except, she did. Lillian started looking forward, too, and wondering if eighteen was too young to give away her life.

Certainly, it is tonight. A rock concert. She and her friend, intoxicating music, sweat, bodies, freedom…and him: Paul. The human guitarist’s touch makes her soul sing like the strings of his axe, and everything is possible. Yet, Lillian’s parents, her secrets, her entire world lies elsewhere. Paul doesn’t even see what she is, what she can do. What she must do. This to-die-for human is not of her kind. And yet, something special, something terrifyingly perfect, something eternally true has been…born of lies.

Review:
Seriously, this is probably one of the best prequels I have read in a long time! It was absolutely amazing. I completely adored Paul and Lillian's story. It was a beautiful story and made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It honestly made me feel so lucky to have the relationship I do with my fiance, and that is what you want a book to do to you, make you feel something.

It was just a really great all around story and very interesting to hear how everything happened before their kids were born. Even though it is a prequel, it definitely can't be read out of order of the first two books. You honestly will not experience all the emotions this book brings if you don't read the first two to really learn about these two's characters and you won't understand some pieces of it. It will also completely ruin one of the series cliffhanger/shocker moments.

This book really gave me a whole new sense of the series and made it feel much more well rounded. I feel like I know the characters so much better and understand everything more clearly. I always kind of wondered what the full story was with Lillian and Paul, and why it was so difficult for them to come back to the pack, and now I completely understand.

Overall:
Amazing story! It was seriously beautiful and heart warming, and definitely one of the best prequels I have read in a long time. It gave a whole new view on this series and gave much more insight on the main characters. It was awesome to learn how everything started in this series story. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend those who are also fans of this series to get their hands on this book, because it will make you see things so much clearer.

BBReview: "Ivy Granger 2: Ghost Light" By E.J. Stevens

Genre: Adult - Paranormal
Publishing Date: July 9th, 2013
Page Count: 248
Source: Sent to me by the author
Format: E-book

Description from Goodreads.com:
Ivy Granger, psychic detective, thought she'd seen it all...until now.

With a vengeful lamia that only she can see on the city streets, reports of specters walking Harborsmouth cemeteries, and an angry mob of faerie clients at her office door, it's bound to be a long night. Add in an offense against the faerie courts and a few foolish bargains and one thing is clear--Ivy Granger is in some seriously deep trouble.

Ivy Granger is back, gathering clues in the darkest shadows of downtown Harborsmouth. With the lives of multiple clients on the line, she's in a race against time. Ivy finally has a lead to the whereabouts of the one person who can help her control her wisp abilities, but will she put the needs of her clients above her own?

If Ivy doesn't find a solution soon, she could wind up a ghost herself.

GHOST LIGHT is the second novel in the bestselling Ivy Granger urban fantasy series by E.J. Stevens.

Review:
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Ivy Granger Series is fantastic! Ghost Light was a great second book. Luckily, it didn't have that second book curse that most series have. We have all experienced the second book curse, where the second book in the series isn't as great as the first one and kind of tugs down the series till book three revives it. Ghost Light didn't have this problem. I think it is because of the structure these books take. This series doesn't really have tales that lead into each. I mean, they all obviously belong in the same series, but it's almost as if each book tells it's own little story of Ivy's life. You still have to read them in order, but it isn't full of cliffhangers. With a series like that there could be an infinite number of books in the series and none would take away from the series as a whole, because they offer their own little story to tell.

Speaking of own little unique story, Ghost Light's story was fantastic. It was a very absorbing and entrancing story line and I think that was partly because E.J. really picked topics that would pull on the readers heartstrings. I won't tell you what the big plot device was since it doesn't give it away in the books description, but just know that I thought it was genius. It really had me hooked and rooting that time would be on Ivy's side.

The only thing that I didn't really like was the ending. It just didn't seem powerful enough. I felt like the ending should have been like BOOM! THE END! But at the same time that really isn't this series style. Still I think it definitely would have added to the series thrill factor if there was a cliffhanger thrown in. I still enjoyed everything, I just thought it was maybe too pleasant of an ending. It does give a good sneak peek as to what's coming in the series future. Regardless I am still a huge fan of the series and I cannot wait to see whats in store!

Overall:
Really great second book! It didn't have the terrible book 2 in a series curse, which I was very thankful for. The plot was ingenious and really pulled on your heartstrings. Good thinking E.J.!!  However,  I do wish that ending was a little more powerful. Regardless it was a great read and I am still a huge fan of the series. Paranormal fans if you haven't picked up this series yet, what is wrong with you?

Praise for the Ivy Granger series:
"I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sarcastic wit, supernatural beings, a good mystery and one kick butt heroine."
--Paranormal Romance Guild

"Readers will love E.J's signature humorous writing, her kick-butt protagonist, and one heck of an unpredictable story."
--A Cupcake and a Latte

"I love the world of Harborsmouth. Stevens has again managed to create characters that I loved. She has this knack for making quirky, endearing characters. Ivy, Jinx, Kaye, Marvin, and Hob are perhaps more addicting than the characters from the Spirit Guide series."
--Reading Lark

“If you like urban fantasy, especially with very realistic depictions of the fae, you really need to read E.J. Stevens’ Ivy Granger series."

Really great week this week! I finally won a giveaway =D It has been a really long time since I have won something and I couldn't pick a better prize. I cannot wait to start reading The Rules of You and Me. I also started a new meme this week, Book Blogger Confessions. I think it will be a lot of fun and will be a way for you all to get to know me better and vice versa. I have also been reading a WHOLE LOT and getting a lot of review books out of the way early. In non-blog related news I will be leaving this Wednesday for New York! I am the president of my sorority and because of that I am being sent to NY by our headquarters for our biannual conference. This year my sorority turns 100 so we are also having a HUGE celebration. We were founded in New York so it's a very fitting occasion. I am so pumped for everything that has been planned out for me and the other presidents to do. I think that is about it for this week.

BBReview: "Death Day 1: Pitch" By Jillian Eaton

Genre: Young Adult - Paranormal/Horror
Publishing Date: May 19th, 2012
Source: Sent to me by the author
Format: E-Book

Description from Goodreads.com:
Sixteen-year-old Lola is a daredevil. She likes playing hooky, making out with bad boy Everett James, and stealing cars. The reason behind all of her rebellious antics? Because she can. But what can one girl do against a horde of murderous vampires?

Aided by her sometimes sober father, her best friend Travis, and Maximus, the mysterious stranger who appeared out of no where to save her life, Lola must accomplish what the rest of the human race has failed to do in the aftermath of the world wide massacre: survive.

But how do you survive when everything you know has been destroyed... and the one person you thought you could trust ends up being the most dangerous person of all?

Review:
Pitch is a very short read, only about 110 pages, but in that short amount of time a lot happens. I think the pace was excellent, it wasn't too fast or too slow. That was the main reason I really enjoyed this novella, the pace. I just felt like everything was done with good timing, which I think is something hard to do in such a short amount of time. I know I had trouble in my creative writing class with making the timing just right, and Jillian did it flawlessly.

The story line was very interesting. I am not a big fan on paranormal apocalypses, I am more of a fan of kissing vampires rather than killing them, but I found Pitch to be a very interesting read and a topic I enjoyed. I also really enjoyed the tension between our two main characters, Lola and Maximus. From the second they met I knew they were going to be a very interesting pair.

The ending was awesome and definitely left me wanting more! I couldn't believe what happened and really hope there is more to it in book two. I really must know what is going to happen next and will definitely be continuing on with this series.

Overall:
Very, very good book. It is short so I read it all in one day, but even if it was longer I think I would have read it quickly just because of how interesting the story line and it's characters were. The pace was excellent and I never felt like the story was rushed or slowed down. The ending was fantastic and I cannot wait to get my hands on book two! I will definitely be continuing on with this series. I recommend this series to those who are into the paranormal and more specifically vampire take overs.

Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 5/5

Follow Friday #156

This Weeks Follow Friday Question:
Today is the US' Independence Day. Share your favorite book with a war in it, or an overthrow of the government.

Mine would have to be a toss up between The Hunger Games and The Selection. The Hunger Games has a clear war element and overthrow of the government so it's a pretty obvious choice. The Selection's main story isn't overthrowing the government (it's kind of the opposite), but at the same time there is a strong element of rebellion through out the entire book.

DON'T FORGET! GFC IS BEING TAKEN DOWN SO PLEASE MAKE SURE TO FIND AN ALTERNATE WAY TO FOLLOW
