This week is going to be a long one for me

Most of you know that I am in a sorority. If you didn't...Surprise! I am also the president of this said sorority. Not the national president, but I am the president of the chapter at my university. Anyways, this week is what we call formal recruitment. It is a week long recruitment period where us and two other sororities on my campus all recruit together at the same time, in the same location, the same way. The process is really interesting and fair and awesome, but it is a LOT of work.

The Sunday Post ~ Twenty Seventh Edition

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. The Sunday Post is a new meme where you can post about the new books you got this past week (books I was asked to bite), or recap what has been happening the past week on your blog (bites you may have missed), or a sneak peek for what is to come (what you can look forward to biting into), or even a final recap of your week in general (one last parting bite).

Random Number Survey

I saw this done by Bekka at Pretty Deadly Reviews and thought it looked like tons of fun. If you want to join in the fun, then be my guest and make sure to send me a link to yours!!

---

How to play:
1. Pick a number:  keep in mind how many books you have.  If you only have one bookshelf, maybe chose a number between 1 and 10.  If you have an entire library, go ahead and chose a larger number.

2. Go to your bookshelf and count that many books until you reach your number.  Answer the question for that book.

3. Count the same number from where you left off, and answer that question.

4. Repeat until you’re finished!

---

My number: 30

1.  What do you think of the cover?
(Charming By Elliott James)
I kind of like the cover, but then again I kind of don't. I would like it a LOT better if he wasn't holding that sword. It's too shiny and looks like a light saber. That just makes this book seem cheesy.

2.  Write a review in 140 characters or less:
(After By Ellen Datlow and Terri Winding)

"I haven't read this one yet, but I have high hopes it will be good!"

3.  How or where did you get this book?
(Inbetween By Tara Fuller)

I bought it from Barnes and Nobles after hearing good things about it.

4.  Who is your favorite character from this book?
(A Midsummer's Nightmare By Kody Keplinger)

I haven't read it yet so I don't have any favorite characters =(

5.  Recommend this book to a fellow blogger you think would like it.
(Breaking Dawn By Stephenie Meyer)

I recommend this to Ashley from Support Indie Authors and Step Into Fiction. I have never asked if she has ever read it, but I'm sure she's gotta since we're hillbilly sisters and all =F

6.  How long ago did you read this book?
(The Catcher in the Rye By J.D. Salinger)

The last time I read it I was a senior in high school. I need to pick it up again since it's one of my all time favorites =D

7.  Name your favorite scene from this book.
(Soul Screamers Vol 1 By Rachel Vincent)

I have only read the first book in this volume and the prequel, but I think my favorite scene would probably be from the prequel and that would be when Kaylee is put in a mental hospital. It's my favorite because it is so raw and emotional. I literally cried.

8.  Open up to page 87 and share a quote (no spoilers!):
(Anna Dressed in Blood By Kendare Blake)

"She looks a little pale, like she might have been crying or throwing up, but she's still dressed well and carrying books. Not terribly worse for wear."

9.  How did you hear about or discover this book?
(Goddess Interrupted By Aimee Carter)

This is the sequel in the Goddess Test series, and I heard about it of course after I read the first one. To be more helpful, I heard about the first one when I met Aimee Carter at a book signing, but I didn't think I would like her book so I didn't buy it. I ended up later borrowing it from my local library and loving it.

10.  If you could redesign the cover, what would you do?
(Something Strange and Deadly By Susan Dennard)
Current Cover:

I really like this cover a lot, actually, but if I was going to change it I would make it look more like it's sequel,  A Darkness Strange and Lovely, because that it freaking beautiful!

Sequel Cover:

11.  Name your least favorite character in this book.
(Breathe By Abbi Glines)

I feel so terrible about myself. I haven't read this one either lol. Honestly I counted all the books I owned and then counted the number I have read, and let's just say it was an embarrassing number. I don't even want to count my kindle books.

12.  Fill in the blanks:  If you like ___ then you should like (your book).
If you like Mean Girls then you should like Pretenders by Lisi Harrison

I haven't read this one either (of course), so I just guessed based on the description.

13.  Name one cool thing about this book (under the dust jacket, illustrations, font, etc.)
(3:59 By Gretchen McNeil)

One cool thing is the color of the cover model's eye. It's so creepy and beautiful, and it feels like she is watching you. Fun Fact: this is the first Gretchen McNeil book I have started to read!

14.  Where is this set, and would you ever want to this visit this world/place?
(The Boyfriend App By Katie Sise)

Since I haven't read it YET I don't know what location it takes place, but I do know it takes place in High School and sure I'd visit High School. I am one of the lucky people who never thinks their high school years were the worst years of their life.

15.  Who is this dedicated to?
(My Life After Now By Jessica Verdi)

This is dedicated to Michael, Jessica Verdi's inspiring and incredible friend. It is also dedicated to Paul, her wonderful and unfathomably supportive husband.

The Indie-Credible Book Tour with Special Guest ~ LIZ LONG

The Indie-Credible book tour is a month long tour that started on September 1st and will go till September 30th. It is hosted by Little Read Riding Hood and Creative Deeds Reads. The purpose of this book tour is to highlight some amazing indie authors and to showcase just how indie-credible they are. Each blog stop is featuring a different indie author so make sure to stop by them all and to click the banner above to see the full tour list.

The indie-credible author that I was lucky enough to be paired with is the beautiful and talented...

...*drum roll*...

Liz Long!!

She is the author of Witch Hearts and (my favorite) Gifted: A Donovan Circus Novel. Liz Long is a very dedicated author who even goes as far as turning off her WiFi to keep from being distracted while writing. When she gets writers block she goes to the good old fashioned version of writing; paper and pen. Her motivation to keep writing is the positive reinforcement that her adoring fans give her, but be aware that if you do tell her how much you loved her work you will be attacked with exclamation points and be offered homemade cookies, even though Liz is a terrible baker. Her favorite book is Harry Potter and it was the inspiration to make her start creating her own works of art. Her favorite Disney princess is Belle, which wins me over hands down. The best piece of advice that she has ever received (which is also the best advice I have ever heard) is to "write what you want to read." Liz stands by that advice and even says, "I'd pick my book up in a store and I swear I'm not saying that just because."

Like stated before, my favorite book by Liz is Gifted: A Donovan Circus Novel
Gifted is about a girl named Lucy who was born with the gift to control and create fire. Her dream is to go back to the circus life, and when she finally does return everything seems perfect. That is until troupe members start turning up dead, and the prime suspect is Lucy. Gifted is an amazing book that had me hooked from page one. If you would like to read my review of it go HERE

Since I enjoyed Gifted so much it only seemed fitting to make our indie-credible post, like the book, circus themed. SO without further ado I welcome you all to...

The Kissing Booth!!

Hi everyone! Thanks so much to the fantastic group that is the Indie-Credible authors and bloggers hosting this event this month – and HUGE thanks to Becky, who I am so excited to be paired up with! Because Becky enjoyed my first book, GIFTED, a Donovan Circus Novel, we wanted to go with a fun carnival theme today. And in the carnival, we’re visiting the KISSING BOOTH! (Cue the wolf whistles here.)

In Gifted, Lucy gets comfortable in her new circus life and falls for two guys. Keegan, the handsome brunette Firestarter with green eyes and a Boston accent, is the honest nice guy, the one who would bend over backwards to make his girl happy. Gabriel, on the other hand, is the hot bad boy Empath with a Southern drawl, blond and brooding, with a lot of mystery behind his wall of wit.

These two boys couldn’t be more opposite, each of them vying for Lucy’s affections in different ways. Readers have been surprisingly adamant in their choices, giving me different reasons for why Lucy should pick one or the other. Let’s just say there are pros and cons to both boys.

Many readers love Gabriel’s sarcasm – Lucy sees his conversations as aggravating, though he insists the challenges he gives Lucy is so she can see the truth in their current situations. He’s frustrating as hell, a womanizer, and knows far more about things than he lets on. He’s also an Empath who avoids his gift, as he doesn’t want to get caught up in emotional affairs, his only goal in life to stick to his lone wolf persona.

With Gabriel, it’s dangerous and fun. He’s sexy and knows how good he is at everything. He is fierce and passionate, impulsive. He and Lucy butt heads on everything because they are so alike, both avoiding emotions and confrontation. They challenge each other—even if they are frustrated with the other, they still find them to be witty and intelligent, sometimes proving good points they hadn’t considered. (It’s like verbal sparring.) He is smart and knows the world pretty well—at least the downsides of it from his past, which we’ll learn more about as the series continues.

Keegan, on the other hand, is a Firestarter like Lucy, who understands her trials and tribulations when dealing with her emotions and fire. He’s the preppy sweater to Gabriel’s motorcycle jacket, kind and considerate, the ultimate nice guy who will do everything in his power to protect and support his friends. He’s a team player, so to speak, and fights for what he believes in rather than avoiding confrontation. Keegan also likes to have fun and keep things lighthearted.

Lucy feels safe with Keegan. He would never let anything happen to her, would do anything she asked. He’s so eager to please her that it’s easy to be with him. He’s always complimenting her, wanting her skills to go far and supporting her choices. Some worried he was too much of a nice guy, but I’m happy to say that in BURNED, book 2 of the series, he manages to not only grow a backbone, but stand up for himself - even to Lucy when she’s giving him the runaround. (He surprised even me!)

In fact, these two boys are so opposite that the only thing they truly have in common is Lucy. Both care for her well being, no matter what happens, and it’s why Lucy is having such a difficult time choosing who she wants to be with, as both make her happy in different ways.
What say you, readers? Who would you pick at the Kissing Booth? Dark and sexy Gabriel (who’s bound to tease you enough to make you want to shake him) or sweetheart Keegan (who will cuddle with you afterwards)?

About the Author:
Liz Long is lucky enough to have a dream career in magazine publishing as an editor and writer, yet still have time to create adventures on the side. If you catch her staring off into space or talking to herself, don’t worry – it’s just her imagination at work.

Liz graduated from Longwood University with a BA in English, though her professors might be disappointed to hear she reads more fantasy fiction than literary novels. She also loves action and thriller genres. Her books might not change your life, but she hopes they steal you away from reality for a while.

About the Author

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

Excerpt

Happy with the amount of photos I had collected I started to head back out of the forest, still flicking through my shots. As well as close ups, I had taken a few landscapes and as I was almost at the edge of the forest I noticed something in one of the photographs that made me stop.
In the left hand corner was a figure that looked mostly human, but was blurred as if they were moving on the spot.
A cold shudder shot through me.
Looking over my shoulder I became slightly panicked and felt as if someone was following me.
My eyes flicked and searched the shadows. Even though there was no sign that anything had ever been behind me, the forest looked different now - dark and threatening.
Instinctively I broke away and ran, still clutching the camera that was displaying the freaky image. Surrounded by trees I didn’t stop until I was free of the forest and back in the open light and sight of my house.
Throwing open my door, I slumped against the inside of it, regaining my breath from the short sprint. Once I had recovered I looked down at the photo once more, just to make sure that I hadn’t been seeing things. The old saying “the camera never lies,” came into my mind and for the first time I wished it not to be true. Sure enough though, as I looked down at the screen, the figure was still there and this time I noticed a red and orange glow around where its feet should have been. The image almost looked like the person was on fire but I thought I would have surely noticed if there had been a burning man in front of me.

Yallfest Interview with Sean Williams

Sean Williams was born in the dry, flat lands of South Australia, where he still lives with his wife and family. He has been called many things in his time, including "the premier Australian speculative fiction writer of the age", the "Emperor of Sci-Fi", and the "King of Chameleons" for the diversity of his output. That award-winning output includes over thirty-five novels for readers all ages, seventy-plus short stories across numerous genres, the odd published poem, and even a sci-fi musical.

On the sci-fi front, he is best-known internationally for award-winning space opera series and novels set in the Star Wars universe, many co-written with fellow-Adelaidean Shane Dix. These include the Astropolis, Evergence, Orphans, and Geodesica series, and the computer game tie-in The Force Unleashed--the first such adaptation ever to debut at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. A series for young readers, The Fixers, pitted an increasingly lost protagonist against zombies, cyborgs, and vampires across numerous universes. His most recent releases in the Star Wars universe are The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance and The Force Unleashed 2.

His fantasy novels--inspired by the landscapes of his childhood--occupy a unique niche in Australian publishing. These include the Books of the Change (The Stone Mage & the Sea, The Sky Warden & the Sun, and The Storm Weaver & the Sand) and the Books of the Cataclysm (The Crooked Letter--the first fantasy novel to win both the Aurealis and Ditmar Awards--The Blood Debt, The Hanging Mountains, and The Devoured Earth). His most recent entries in this world include the Broken Land series (The Changeling, The Dust Devils, and The Scarecrow) and novellas in two anthologies, The Dragon Book and Legends of Australian Fantasy.

Sean’s stories have been gathered in five collections, including New Adventures in Sci-Fi, Light Bodies Falling and Magic Dirt: the Best of Sean Williams. He still lives with his family in South Australia, where his poem “Reflections on Water” forms the text for the new Adelaide Zoo’s welcoming soundscape. He takes an active role in writing-related organisations and writer advocacy groups, sitting on the committees of The Big Book Club Inc, the Adelaide Writers’ Week Advisory Committee, and the premier international representational body of speculative fiction writers, SFWA.

When he’s not writing or in meetings, he likes to cook and DJ, but never at the same time.

Interview:

What one thing do you need to have when you write?
The right music. And chocolate as a reward when I finish.

Describe your book in 5 words
Jump meets Uglies. But different.

What is the hardest line to write- the first or the last?
The first line is often the hardest to write, but I like a good challenge. The line I like writing the least is the last because it means I have a whole load of rewriting ahead of me.

Best writing tip you ever received?
Give up. If you can do that, you’ll be happier and probably better off as a result. If you can’t, then you know writing is exactly the right thing for you!

Tell us 5 random facts about yourself.
1) I live in Adelaide, South Australia, a place that’s home to about a million other people but somehow feels like a small town, which is why I love it.
2) I still think music from the 1980s is cool.
3) My stepson has situs invertus, which means his heart is on the wrong side of his body. That’s not really about me, but it is pretty random.
4) I’m a huge fan of Doctor Who.
5) I’m minding a pair of green tree frogs, Skipper and Jumpy, for a young friend while she’s overseas with her family. You can see pictures of them on my Facebook page.

Where's your favorite place to write?
In my study, a lovely upstairs nook containing all my favorite book-related things, but I’ve trained myself to write anywhere as long as I have my headphones and some music. I quite like writing in hotels, probably because someone else does all the household chores.

What are you working on now?
Crashland, the sequel to Twinmaker.

BBReview: "The Selection 2: The Elite" By Kiera Cass

Genre: Young Adult - Dystopian/Romance
Publishing Date: April 23rd, 2013
Page Count: 323
Source: Local Library
Format: Hardcover

Description from Goodreads.com:
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestseller The Selection.

Thirty-five girls came to the palace to compete in the Selection. All but six have been sent home. And only one will get to marry Prince Maxon and be crowned princess of Illea.

America still isn’t sure where her heart lies. When she’s with Maxon, she’s swept up in their new and breathless romance, and can’t dream of being with anyone else. But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, and is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide.

Just when America is sure she’s made her choice, a devastating loss makes her question everything again. And while she’s struggling to imagine her future, the violent rebels that are determined to overthrow the monarchy are growing stronger and their plans could destroy her chance at any kind of happy ending.

Review:
I am still very much in love with this series, but The Elite is probably not going to be a my favorite book in the series. It was a very depressing second book, and since I was already in a pretty crappy mood it definitely just fueled the fire. I do not recommend reading this when you are already in a depressing mood, because the book will be almost suffocating. I really loved the story until the holiday party. I won't tell you what holiday or what happens, because I don't want to ruin the fun, but it just gets really depressing from there.

I also really wish that there was more of a resolve at the end. I feel like American and I are still in the same mindset that we were at by the end of the first book. A lot happens with the guys, but in the end I feel like nothing big enough happened to help sway American on who she will choose. I am also very wishy washy on who she should choose as well. I thought I knew, but now I feel like I don't want her to choose either of them. Isn't that awful? I really hope things will change in book three, I mean they have to since its the last book, but I hope I like the outcome. I am just really kind of sick of this whole love triangle and want it to end.

I have always wanted Maxon to win, but my views on him have changed a lot with book two. It turns out he isn't the sweet guy we all thought he was. A lot happens to show Maxon's true colors and I really don't know how to feel about him. I just hope that he will go back to the guy I liked in book three. No matter what, though, I do not want her with Aspen.

On the positive side of the book America is realizing her potential and I absolutely love that. She is finally figuring out who she is and what she wants. She is becoming so much more confident in her abilities and is seeing that she is so much more than just a number.

Overall:
The Elite is a very emotionally draining book. This is not a happy-go-lucky edition to the series at all, and I would not suggest reading it while you are already in a crappy mood unless you want to add to your already bad mood. I am kind of glad that there is only one more book left in the series, because I really want this love triangle to end. I don't like love triangles already, but this one is just dragging on with no hint of it being resolved. My feelings on Maxon have changed a lot and he isn't the sweet guy I thought he was. Regardless I still don't want America with Aspen, so Maxon better shape up. On the positive side America is finally gaining self confidence and is realizing her potential. I thought that was a really great thing that came out of book two.

Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ 3/5

Yallfest Interview with CJ Lyons

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of seventeen novels, former pediatric ER doctor CJ Lyons has lived the life she writes about in her cutting edge Thrillers with Heart.

CJ has been called a "master within the genre" (Pittsburgh Magazine) and her work has been praised as "breathtakingly fast-paced" and "riveting" (Publishers Weekly) with "characters with beating hearts and three dimensions" (Newsday).

Learn more about CJ's Thrillers with Heart at www.CJLyons.net and everything she knows about being a bestseller at www.NoRulesJustWRITE.com

---

Describe your book in 5 words:
CJ: Girl dying of broken heart (literally)

What is the hardest line to write- the first or the last?
CJ: The first. I’ll often return to it over and over again until I’ve sliced and diced and fine-honed it to that perfect combination of intrigue, visceral reaction, and emotional connection with the reader.

What one young adult novel do you wish you had when you were a teen? Why?
CJ: Code Name Verity because it is so emotionally honest and inspiring, empowering, not to mention gut-wrenching. Really brings the era to life as well as the sacrifices made in the name of freedom.

Tell us 5 random facts about yourself.
CJ: When I was a kid I worked summer stock theatre and was actually a theatre major undergrad before switching to pre-med. I’ve had two hard landings in helicopters while working as a flight doc. I survived rampaging Cape Horn Buffalo and a pack of wild baboons, not to mention a leopard (he’s already eaten) while hiking in Hells Gate Park in Kenya. I’m a Capricorn. I diagnosed my niece with the heart condition that’s at the center of my YA thriller, BROKEN.

What are you working on now?
CJ: DAMAGED, my next YA thriller, due out in 2014. It deals with the really tough topic of abuse and coercion and is the most difficult book I’ve ever tackled—there have been times while writing when I was literally in tears as I typed.

What is your favorite genre to write in? To Read?
CJ: I created my own genre of Thrillers with Heart—I love writing fast paced stories with raising stakes but centered on the emotional heart of an evolving relationship. As for reading, I read almost every genre but especially love YA, magical realism, and thrillers. As long as a story grabs me by the throat and won’t let me go because I’m too worried about what the characters are going through, I’ll read it and love it.

This Weeks Teaser Comes From:
One choice can transform you, or destroy you.

Every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves, and herself, while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Insurgent (Divergent, #2)

Teaser 1:
I wake with his name in my mouth.
Before I open my eyes, I watch him crumple to the pavement again. Dead.

Teaser 2:
I sit down on a stool in front of the mirror, and she stands behind me, her eyes dutifully trained on the task at hand rather than her reflection. They do not lift, not even for an instant, as she runs a comb through my hair. And she doesn't ask about my shoulder, how I was shot, what happened when I left the Abnegation safe house to stop the simulation. I get the sense that if I were to whittle her down to  her core, she would be Abnegation all the way through.

Unnatural. One word to sum up werewolf Kyle Larsen—his mood swings, abnormal body, and choice of female.

The first two, he blames on the vampire venom.

The third, though? No, feline shifter Brook Nicholls was all his doing—a female of whom the pack will never approve.

As part of the Coalition, an organisation with even stricter rules than the pack and a rigidly warped sense of responsibility, Brook comes with a whole lot of opposition of her own.

No wonder the two of them keep their relationship secret for as long as they can.

Now, distanced from his family by his own indiscretions, Kyle’s left to fight battles he’s unsure how to win—some of them even against his own pack.

Is one woman really so important that he’s willing to defy his Alpha for her?

If his heart has any say in the matter, the answer will be yes.
