BBReview: "Lux Series 0.5: Shadows" By Jennifer L. Armentrout

Genre: Young Adult -Paranormal
Publishing Date: February 21st, 2012
Page Count: 179
Source: Bought from Amazon
Format: E-Book

Description from Goodreads.com:
The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are... well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can't deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren't a complication she wants, she can't stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she's drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will changer her existence... and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can't stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Review:
Shadows is such a great prequel to this series. I, personally, think its best if you read it after the first book and before the second book. I think it adds more suspense to book two especially when they are speculating what happened to Dawson and Bethany. I really love prequels and honestly think they just add to the story that is already being told. I haven't come across a prequel that I didn't like and this one fits in with that category.

The story of Dawson and Bethany is told a little quickly (duh, it's a prequel) so you have to remind yourself that it is supposed to be that way. It's not supposed to be a full length novel with tons of time for these characters to get to know each other and fall in love, so there is a bit of insta-love in there, but if you love the series already you probably won't care. The story of Dawson and Bethany is truly heart warming and it really makes you see Daemon (the main male character in the Lux series) in a whole new light. You understand why he was so put-off by a friendship with a human and why he didn't want that risk tied to his family again. If you read Shadows and you don't want to continue on with the whole series you are insane! This was really a nice addition to the amazing Lux series that Jennifer has already begun to create.

Overall:
If for what ever reason you are STILL contemplating whether you should start reading the Lux series or not you should definitely read this prequel to finally see that, yes! this is the series for you! Shadows is a really touching story about Daemon Black's brother Dawson and the human girl Bethany he fell in love with. It tells the short version of their love story and what ended up happening to them. It is a great short story for those who haven't decided if the Lux series is for them, and also a great story overall to read even if you are past book two in the series. I highly recommend this as a read to those fans of the Lux series or future fans.

THE COVER REVEAL!!!

What Would you sacrifice to save the one's you love? To save the one who holds your heart? To save the world?
-
Kenley Grayson is all too familiar with these questions.
-
After Earth is thrust into its first intergalactic war with an unknown race called the Bringers, our military forces begin to suffer heavy losses. Desperate for a solution, the Allied Federation issues a worldwide draft for every able seventeen-year-old to enlist. As Kenley turns seventeen, she finds herself thrown into the very war that took her older brother's life.
This year's draft is a little different than in the past though. A new program, known as the Magnus Project, has been introduced, and only the best and brightest qualify. Kenley is amongst a select few whom are chosen to join this elite group of soldiers, and as a part of this project, undergoes a modification procedure that leaves her and her peers endowed with powers beyond their wildest dreams.
As Earth continues in its struggle against the Bringers, Kenley is transported to a high-tech training facility, the Magnus Academy, to prepare for the major battle that lies ahead. It's here that she meets the California heartthrob, and son of a legendary war hero, Landon Shaw. As unexpected feelings toward Landon begin to develop, Kenley wonders if this is the right time or place for romance to bloom, especially when those feelings starts to interfere with her training.
With the weight of the world on her shoulders, Kenley is constantly reminded of how important she and the rest of the Magnus cadets are to the fate of humanity. She is one of the Modified, Earth's last line of defense against utter destruction.

Wow! This cover is something else!! I normally don't like models on the cover of my books, because then I can't use my imagination as to what the characters look like so its no surprise that I don't like the dude on the cover, but I love the girl on the cover. I think she is perfect and since (as far as I can tell) she is the main characters and whom the stories point of view is from, I think its perfect that I like her more, because then she is the main focus in every way. I really love the cosmic-esq background and their glowy hands =)

Question of the Moment 106

How do you feel about prequels? Do you think they are the perfect addition to a series or do you think they are pointless?

I love prequels. I think they are perfect when you are already reading the series and when you haven't started the series yet, too. Prequels usually come out after the first novel and right before the second novel. I used to find it annoying, because I always thought of prequels as teasers almost, since they are short, but still give you the essence of what is to come in that series. Now I understand their purpose... at least I think I do. When you are already reading a series it is nice to read the prequel that comes out later, because if you are continuing on past book 1 you are obviously a fan of the series so a prequel is almost like bonus features to me. Its like an understanding of what took place before what happens in book one. Also when the prequel is the first thing you read in the series then it is like a sneak peak or a teaser/excerpt. It doesn't really tell you what is going to happen in book 1, but it lets you know enough about the essence of a series so that you know whether you would actually want to read it or not. I know there have been plenty of times where I have read the prequel first and that is what makes me start the series in the first place.

So how do you feel about prequels? Hate 'em or Love 'em? Let me know in the comments below =]

BBReview: "Pushing The Limits" By Katie McGarry

Genre: Young Adult -Contemporary
Publishing Date: July 31st, 2012
Page Count: 392
Source: BEA 2012
Format: Paperback

Description from Goodreads.com:
No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

Review:
You know I have not read a single bad review on this novel. Everyone I know has loved it and I knew I was going to too. I am so glad the hype did not disappoint. I think I may have even loved it more, because I read it for a read-a-long where you only have a certain number of pages that you can read each week. I think it made me love the story more, because they say distance makes the heart grow fonder and that is what happened to me and this book. It always seemed I had to stop reading right at the good parts and had to wait a whole week to find out what happened. I mean if you can force yourself to only read 50 pages a week then go for it, but it is such a good story that I don't think you will want to.

I love, love, LOVED Noah and Echo's characters. They were very well developed and I think they stayed true to themselves the whole time. There wasn't like an instant revelation or an instant change in their behavior. They grew with time and with each situation. I think Katie was really on the money with this story when she decided to have it told from both points of view. I LOVE when authors do two POV's, because it really makes the story genuine. I couldn't get enough of either one of the characters story and I think if you would have only told one side of it the reader would have really missed out. Pushing The Limits is a story about two teens with dark pasts and trying to overcome those paths. It is a beautiful coming of age story and love story. I really hope that Katie continues to write young adult novels and I hope they continue to be kind of like Pushing The Limits and done in two POV's. I know she is writing another book from Beth's point of view and I am ecstatic to read it when it comes out!

Overall:
I really loved this story!! It is such a beautiful coming of age/teen romance story. I think both characters (Echo and Noah) were very, very well done and I think they definitely grew up a lot in the space of the book. I think they both acted accordingly in each scene and I wouldn't have changed anything. I absolutely love that it was told in both characters points of view and I think if it wasn't that the story would have lost a lot because of it. Overall really amazingly done and I am a new HUGE fan of Katie McGarry's. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves YA whether you are usually into contemporary or not, because you will fall in love with it. Believe the hype!

Question of the Moment 105

If you recessed your memory because of a traumatic experience, but only lost the memory of that 24 hour period would you want someone to just tell you everything that happened or would you want to remember on your own?

I think I would want someone to tell me small pieces to get my memory going, but I kind of would want to figure it out on my own. Depending on if I even wanted to remember it at all. I would want them to tell me the short version of the gist of what happened and then let me remember, because i wouldn't want their opinions to influence what my real memories of that day were. I think it would be better for me to search myself and remember what happened rather than hear it from other people. I think it might be better that way, but I would also want to know the gist of it, because I wouldn't want to look dumb not knowing what happened. "What happened?" "I don't know.."

Would you want someone to tell you? Let me know in the comments below =]

BBReview: "The Paradise Diaries 1: Dante's Girl" By Courtney Cole

Genre: Young Adult -Contemporary
Publishing Date: June 24th, 2012
Page Count: 356
Source: Bought from Amazon
Format: E-Book

Description from Goodreads.com:
I have spent every summer since I was ten years old with my father in London. Every summer, since i was ten years old, has been uneventful and boring.
Until this year.

And this year, after a freak volcanic eruption strands me far from home, I  have learned these things:

1. I can make do with one outfit for three days before I buy new clothes.
2. If I hear the phrase, "You're not in Kansas anymore, Toto," even one more time, I might become a homicidal maniac.
3. I am horribly and embarrassingly allergic to jellyfish.
4. I am in love with Dante Giliberti, who just happens to be the beautiful, sophisticated son of the Prime Minister of a Mediterranean paradise.
5. See number four above. Because it brings with it a whole slew of problems and I've learned something from everyone one of them.

Let's start with the fact that Dante's world is five light-years away from mine. He goes to black-tie functions and knows the Prime Minister of England on a first name basis. I was born and raised on a farm in Kansas and wear cut-off jeans paired with cowboy boots. See the difference?

But hearts don't care about differences. Hearts want what they want. And mine just wants to be Dante's girl.

My heart just might be crazy.

Review:
Dante's Girl has been on my TBR list for awhile now. During all the buzz when it first came out I bought it for my kindle, but not until recently have I actually gotten to read it. I am so happy I finally did, because it is really good. Dante's Girl isn't your typical contemporary. Yes the main focus is a love story, but there are some twists and turns along the way. The twist towards the end is the biggest of them all and will leave you flipping pages like a mad man to figure out what happens.

This was a really good story. There were a lot of swoon moments and some moments when I wanted to cry along with Reece. I liked Reece's character a lot, but there were some times when she could have gotten around having awkward moments. For example when she is on the phone with her best friend when she's yelling at her and she doesn't go anywhere and lets people over hear her which causes more problems. And I was kind of hot and cold to Dante. There were some times when he was really nice and sweet and swoony and then there were other times when he was really douche and I just wanted to punch him in the face for his lame excuses.

I really liked the story though. Girl falls in love with stranger at airport who turns out to be rich and famous. Its a very sweet story. Although I didn't like the times when Dante was a huge jerk face I think it did help the story, because then you wanted him to change so bad. I also really liked the who-done-it parts of the book, because the ending was very intense!

Overall:
I really loved this story. It was very sweet and swoony and it really made you feel something. I think Reece was a great character and I think she showed the best qualities of an American in her character. The mystery and surprise element on the novel was really well done and had me flipping pages to see what was going to happen at the end. I really enjoy it when I actually feel what the characters are feeling and I really felt it with this novel. I am definitely going to check out more by Courtney Cole =)

Top Ten Bookish Confessions

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there will be a new topic for everyone to create a top ten list with.

This Weeks Topic:
Top Ten Bookish Confessions (Anything! You dog ear, you hated a book but said you loved it, you have $500 library fines... anything goes!)

I don't think I do anything "bad" that is worth confessing about that I can think of so these confessions will be more like OCD things I do with my books.
  1. I don't like putting my books on the ground. Even when I am taking photos of them for my Sunday Post it kind of kills me to lay them down on the cold hard wood floor.
  2. I never keep the jacket on a book while reading it. I am too scared to mess up the jacket.
  3. I have a ritual I go through before reading a book. I read everything on the front and back of the book jacket, I then take of the jacket and see what the actual cover looks like. I then read every page until i get to the actual page 1 and then I read the story. Same thing goes with after "The End". I have to read the excerpt thats included, the acknowledgements, and the about the author.
  4. No matter how many times I let someone borrow one of my books I always have to lecture them on the proper care of my books.
  5. Whenever I get a new books I always inspect it to make sure there are no damages and if there is I always have a mini heart attack and have to convince myself to forget about it.
  6. Whatever emotion is going on in the book, I start to feel it in real life. I.E. if the girl is mad at her boyfriend, I start being jerky to mine by accident.
  7. I never leave my books lying around. If I am done with them, but need to review them I put them in a little pile by my computer, but I am done and they are reviewed they go right back on the shelf.
  8. I can't multi-task while reading. Like I can't be eating dinner, or have the TV on, or anything. It needs to be me and the book or  I will get distracted and forget what is going on.
  9. When I first start reading and I am around my family I have to yell at them to be completely silent until I get absorbed in the book. Once I am zoned in they can do anything and I won't hear them, but in the beginning if I can't concentrate then I will re-read the same line over and over again.
  10. Before reading I have to be very cozy. I have to have a snack, something to drink, blanket and  get all settled in.
I am kind of crazy, but hey thats me lol

*UPDATE*
After reading some others answers I have come up with a few confessions =)
  1. I am a huge cover judger. If it has a bad cover I probably won't read it, unless the description is really good and then I'll either borrow it from the library or i'll just get it for the kindle, but it won't go on my shelf. Also i usually only check out the blogs I follow via email and I will only read their review of a book I haven't heard of if I like the cover.
  2. If I am just stumbling across your blog for the first time (like on FF) then I will always follow via GFC if your blog interests me, but I will only follow via email if I love your blog design or you have some REALLY good posts.
  3. I cringe when I see dog eared pages. It hurts me soul to see them bent lol
  4. I very very rarely read an adult romance/erotica book, but if I do I don't read it professional or maturely. I blush the whole time and giggle and look around like someone will yell at me once they discover what I am reading.
  5. I don't like the classics. There are like two that I have actually liked, but for the most part NO WAY!

BBReview: "Croak 1: Croak" By Gina Damico

Genre: Young Adult -Paranormal
Publishing Date: March 20th, 2012
Page Count: 311
Source: BEA 2012/NetGalley
Format: E-Book/Paperback

Description from Goodreads.com:
Fed up with her wild behavior, sixteen-year-old Lex's parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape.

But Uncle Mort's true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He's a Grim Reaper. And he's going to teach Lex the family business.

She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can't stop her desire for justice - or is it vengeance? - whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again.

Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills?

Review:
I have waited so long to get my hands on this novel and finally read it and I am so happy I finally got to. I knew this novel was going to be great and it really was. I loved how snarky Lex is. She was the perfect bad kid. I also loved that even though she was a jerk to everyone that she still really loved her family. She didn't understand why she got so angry and acted out, but it was like a switch and she couldn't control it. She felt guilty, sometimes, after things went bad, but only cause she wanted her family to keep loving her.

The idea of grim reapers really interests me so I was very giddy to read this novel. It did not disappoint at all. I think Gina did an amazing job with the concept of reaping and explaining how they do their jobs. I think it was very different and unique. Other than the reaping aspects of the novel I really like the friendships that blossomed. I think they were a little fastly formed, but in such a small town you kind of have to stick together. The only problem I had with this novel is that when they are trying to figure out who done it there were some times where if it was me I would have been questioning and piecing somethings together, but they characters didn't until way later on. It kind of bugged me, because it was a little obvious with one of the clues.

Other than that little problem I loved Croaked. I think it was an awesome novel and I cannot wait to continue on with the series. The ending was a bit emotional, but thats what I love. I love when you truly connect with characters because of emotion. Very good job Gina!

Overall:
I loved this novel! I love the idea of Grim Reapers and this novel did not disappoint in the reaper area. I think the way that Gina described the reapers jobs was very interesting. I loved Lex's character and was glad to see her character grow through out the novel. I am very glad I got to finally read this novel and I will definitely be continuing on in the series.

Question of the Moment 104

If your parents had a life plan set out for you would you deviate from the plan to create your own happiness or would you follow their path and hope along the way you find happiness?

I honestly don't know. For the most part I have stuck to their plan. Graduate high school, go to UofM. But it was also something I wanted to do. It wasn't just for them. I guess if they wanted me to do or be something I truly wasn't happy with I would deviate. I try to listen to my mom and do what she wants for me, but then again I also take into consideration what makes me happy and try to do both at the same time. In novels though I always root for the character to do what makes them happy so I guess I would do the same.

What would you do? Let me know in the comments below =]

Week #5 Questions

1. By finally returning to her art, Echo is working through her issues and taking control of her life. While she's not ever going to return to her previous "normal", she uses her art as a way to work her way to a place where she's more comfortable with herself. How do you deal with the issues and stresses of your life?
I really think over everything, talk to myself like a crazy person (lmao) and let everything out. I then usually cry it out, decide what my plan of action is to rectify the situation and then I keep myself busy to keep my mind off of it. When I get mad i get MAD, but I don't like being mad/sad/angry. I like to fix things so I tend to talk myself down and then stay busy to keep those feelings from returning. If I could paint I probably would do that so I'm glad Echo started doing that again, but for me I usually read, blog, or clean.

2. Once Noah gives his brothers and their soon-to-be adoptive parents a happy ending, he decides toget his own by winning Echo back. Why does he think stealing her file is the best way to do it? Any other (better) suggestions for the poor boy?
I think he thinks its the best way to get her back, because when she got the chance to see the files she went for his like they planned and he has never gotten to see hers. It made him so happy to know something about his brothers foster parents and he wanted her to feel the same so he thought if he could give her the one thing she wanted (answers) she would love him again. I think instead he should have done some big, grand gesture to prove his love. He should have done something so nice and sweet and loving that she couldn't turn him down and at least just hear him out.

3. Echo finally uncovers the terrible truth of what her mother did to her. Now that we know the truth, do you think Echo's father did the right thing by covering up the incident and keeping it from her? How do you think he should have handled it?
I don't have children, but I think if I did I would want to keep them safe and I think he thinks he was doing that. When she didn't remember what her mother did to her he didn't want to make her think ill of her mother purposely and he didn't want to remember such a horrible thing in the first place so I think he was just trying to protect her. I think, though, that if he was going to just let her figure everything out on her own time in her own way that he should have coddled her instead of shielding her. He should have made it so that when she did remember that she had a safe place to run to, not feel alienated even more.

4. Mrs. Collins plays an integral role in helping Echo and Noah find a new normal and happiness in their lives. Tell us about someone in your life who helped you, someone who changed your life, was there for you, or offered help/comfort when you most needed it (or when you didn't know you needed it).
That person would be my loving boyfriend, Zack. He is always there for me no matter what and will listen to me bawl my eyes out and will hold me and tell me everything is alright. I truly love him for that. He is always willing to do anything to make it better. Except of course when the anger is directed at him, then he is a butt head, but then makes of for his jerk self later once we've made up =)

5. Another major truth is revealed when Echo's father finally opens up to his daughter and tells her about their mother and how his relationship with Ashley evolved. Knowing this, how do you feel about Ashley now? And what did you think when you learned the name of the baby?
I don't hate Ashley SO much as I did the whole time I was reading PTL, but I still think she is an idiot. I never really blamed her for everything except getting herself in way over her head and not knowing how to act accordingly. I think she is alright, but I definitely do not love her. I thought the babies name was really sweet, and I think that that was the kick that Echo needed to know that she isn't her mom or her dad, she is herself and its because of her brother. She realized she doesn't want that baby to be like Ashley or her dad either and wants him to be like her, his own person.

6. Echo and Noah ride off into the sunset together. *happy sigh* If you had the chance, who would you ride off with and where would you go?
I would ride off with my boyfriend and I think I would want to go to California. I would want to site see and bask in the sun and just be happy and carefree. I live in Michigan so there isn't a whole lot of basking in the sun and site seeing lmao

Question of the Moment 103

How do you feel about grim reapers? Do you like books about them? If you haven't read any about them are you interested in trying it out?

I LOVE reapers!! I don't know what it is the appeases me about them, but I think they are awesome. Maybe because I love ghosts and they are like the next best thing to ghosts. I honestly don't know, but I love them. I think they are super awesome and I love reading different YA's about the after life and reapers. Its just so interesting and cool! I don't think I'll get over them. I mean there is only so many ways to describe a reaper, but I won't get bored of it. Here are some of my favorite books about reapers or reaper-esque themes books.

Inbetween I haven't read yet, but I have a feeling I am going to like this one as well!!

So how do you feel about reapers? Do you like reading about them or want to? Let me know in the comments below =]

One Last Parting Bite:
I got some really nice books this week! I just finished Onyx so I cannot wait to write that review for next week. My favorite post this past week was probably 500 GFC Followers, because I gush about how much I love you guys; What Are You Pinning?, because I think my pins are awesome lol; and my Follower Appreciation Giveaway, because I think it is an awesome prize for one of my amazing followers. Definitely stop by those if you can. This week I am mostly looking forward to Pushing The Limits week 5, because it is the last week of the read-a-long. So sad to see it go! Also the Cover Reveal for The Modified, because C.A. Kunz is one of my favorite authors and this is a brand new book. Plus as of today I have yet to see the cover for myself so I am super excited to finally see it! Other than that I have been trying to read a lot, because i need to get throught my review TBR list before school starts up in a week lmao! And Saturday my friend and I took a spur of the moment three hour road trip to the complete opposite side of Michigan to go to Lake Michigan to have a nice relaxing beach day. It was seriously the best day ever! Well until it was time to go home, because I put sunblock everywhere BUT the top and bottom of my back and got sunburned pretty badly. Luckily its only on the base of my back and not my shoulders or legs or face so I can still get around and sleep pretty good.

Thanks for checking out my Sunday Post! Hope you check in again next week =D

Follower Appreciation GIVEAWAY!!

HOORAY!! I am so excited for this giveaway!! As stated earlier in my 500 GFC Followers post it is time for my Follower Appreciation GIVEAWAY!!

The school year is upon us and I must return back to college. BUMMER!! Thus, my posts will slow down. My goal is to have at three posts go up a week. Those would be Question of the Moment, a BBReview, and  a Sunday Post. Im hoping to add more like Top Ten Tuesdays and What Are You Pinning? Thursdays and Follow Fridays, but only if I am not too busy. At the very least I am hoping to consistently have at least one post every week even if it is just a check in post to let you know why I have posted anything the past week or what to expect soon.

SO in order to thank all of you amazing follower for sticking with me the past school year and for hopefully sticking with me this next school year I wanted to do a follower appreciation giveaway! I truly do appreciate you guys listening to my opinions and what not. It makes me feel truly loved. Now some are probably thinking isn't she just doing this because she just reached a mile stone in followers? The honest truth? NO.
